This drabble was written in response to a prompt from this whumpy writing prompt quiz.

This was the prompt I received:

A low growl came from the darkness.
An evil monster? A starving animal? A zombie? Whatever it is, it’s hungry for blood, and the whumpee seems to be their next target. Is the whumpee just unlucky enough to cross paths with this beast, or is this a plan to get them killed? Can they escape or fight?

The Warning

The forest was trembling. Was it angry? No, Merlin hadn’t done anything to anger the forest, had he? The rumbling became louder. No. Not louder; closer.

Closer? A forest can’t move closer.

Oh. That wasn’t the forest. At least, not in its entirety. The rumbling was… something. Something angry. Something scared. It was— oh. Growling. He was being warned.

He would heed the warning, he decided. If only his limbs would cooperate. Eventually his legs established themselves underneath him, shaking in eerie synchronicity with the ominous rumbles. Propelled forward by fear and the thinning patience of the shadows, Merlin ran.
